March 1, 2011 - A Norfolk, Virginia man was arrested for using counterfeit checks at several businesses and using the personal information of several residents, including a 102 year old woman. The bank information and identity belonged to different victims. Could proper document destruction have saved these victims?

Business Claims Data Breach is Accidental

June 23, 2010 - A local commercial real estate company, Atkins & Associates, says it accidentally discarded real estate records, which contained sensitive personal information. As some readers may know, Georgia was the first state to legally require destruction of sensitive records, though local law enforcement indicated they would not pursue this case, given the fact that the company retrieved the records from the dumpster when notified of the incident.

Private Papers Found In Trash

Middletown Journal – Middletown, Ohio

April 3, 2010 - Documents originating from the public works and utilities department of Middletown, Ohio filled a dumpster at a city park for over a week. The documents included carbon copies of checks as well as Social Security numbers and phone numbers. City Manager Judy Gilleland said normal records policy calls for documents of that nature to be shredded and not simply thrown away. City officials pledged to adhere to this policy in the future.
